EP Review: SPiN – Meant to Rise

Boom, hey! Philadelphia rock crew SPiN demand your attention with their latest EP Meant to Rise, released on HowsaboutNOW? Music. They keep their brand of alternative rock simple and clean, but incorporate enough fuzzy guitar riffs and upbeat drum kicks to cross over into the realm of catchy pop music. Opening track “Dig Your Own Grave” was the first single premiered off Meant to Rise and carries quite an anthemic cadence. The distorted, tinny vocals create the perfect environment to embrace the noise of classic rock ‘n’ roll roots, a sound that’s gotten a little forgotten lately in the rock music world.

Meant to Rise feels like a call to action from the band. Throughout final track “What’s Going On,” SPiN calls attention to news headlines, violence, and war–all pretty relevant concepts in the current political climate. The lyrics sound melancholic, stating “These headlines and protest signs / and all I see is brutality / Talk to me so you can see what’s going on.” While the vocals identify the dismal circumstances of today’s environment, they also question the obvious ways in which humans mistreat each other. The track features rapper Nickey Knoxx who points out “the common thread we share is we’re all human,” an often overlooked aspect in society.

THE GIST: In four short songs, SPiN created an album that blends classic rock ‘n’ roll elements with a nod towards society’s failings in today’s strained atmosphere. While Meant to Rise doesn’t include any mind-blowing techniques, it stands alone as a strong rock album with sturdy roots.
